COVID-19: Should I Wear Two Masks?
Even though people are continually listening to the guidelines set forth by CDC and taking precautions, there still are questions regarding some of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to COVID-19. One question that has been commonly asked recently is whether we should be double masking or not. We share information from both the CDC and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
At this time, the CDC has not recommended double masking. It does recommend that people should wear masks with two or more layers of washable fabric that cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly on the face. These masks should be:
- Non-medical disposable masks
- Masks that fit snugly around the nose and chin with no large gaps around the sides of the face
- Masks made with breathable fabric such as cotton
- Masks made with tightly woven fabric
- Masks with two or three layers
- Masks with inner filter pockets
On the other hand, Dr. Fauci said, “if you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on; it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective.”
However, after discussing the matter, the CDC and Fauci determined that they do not have enough data to make any formal recommendation at this time.
