5 Ways to Boost Your Mental Health
We are making headway through the end of the coronavirus, and we want to make sure that our patients are being mindful of their mental health. These are challenging times, but it is important to take a moment to clear your mind and remember how important you are to your family, your friends, and your loved ones. To help, we’ve shared some ways to improve your mental health.
Take a Break From the News
Although it is important to know what is going on in your community, make sure that you watch the news in moderation. Much of what the media shares may not be positive, and it can evoke fear and anxiety. If you do plan to watch the news, think about watching it for 30 minutes in the morning and then moving on to your activities for the day.
Create an Optimistic Mindset
The best way to maintain a positive attitude is by thinking optimistically. The next time you speak with someone, monitor how you talk to them. Do you say sentences like “I’m stuck”, “I have to” or “I can’t”? Instead of saying you are not able to or you have to do something, try to change your language to “I get to” or “I can do”. By using more positive language, it not only gives you encouragement, but it also helps those around you become more positive.
Take Care of Your Body
By taking care of your body, it also helps your mind. When you wake up in the morning, stretch, meditate, and do whatever else you need to start your day off right. Throughout the day, make sure to breathe, take breaks, and eat well-balanced meals. It is also important to get regular exercise and a good night’s rest to help you feel energized and healthy.
Create a New Routine
Even though your routine may not be normal right now, it is important to adjust and create a new one. Take the time to set boundaries and to create designated areas in the house for working, sleeping, and play. When you are in those areas, you should not be working or distracted doing other activities. Once you have your daily routine set, take the time to schedule fun activities that you enjoy. They can give you purpose and something to look forward to.
Create Social Interaction
We are human, and humans need social interaction. If you haven’t already done so, set up Zoom calls with your loved ones to chat. If you feel it is appropriate, meet up with family and friends, but make sure you social distance at least six feet apart. Lastly, when you communicate with family and friends, make sure that you share how much you care about them and how much they are appreciated. You never know what is going to happen and what they may be facing in their personal lives. By sharing your thoughts, it will not only make their day, but it will encourage them to want to share their appreciation with others they know.
