Is My Environment Affecting My Health?
While we may not think about it, we are constantly exposed to the environment. Although we cannot control every factor that affects our environment, we can still make personal choices to reduce the impact.
At South Coast Medical, we want to remind our patients about some of the things that can make us sick that may not be top of mind. We are fortunate to live in and around Aliso Viejo, a beautiful and clean city. But, as we know, bacteria and other illness-causing elements can exist anywhere.
Environmental Conditions that Can Impact Your Health:
Poor Air Quality
We breathe air every day, and having clean air is crucial to good health. Did you know that poor air quality can cause premature death, cancer, and long-term damage to respiratory and cardiovascular systems? We generally have clean air. On days when it is smoggy, reduce your time outside and limit outdoor activity. You can also contribute to better breathing by taking preventative measures to promote better air quality.
Contaminated Water and Surfaces
Water is essential to living, and it is why it is crucial to have clean water. Most of us are fortunate to have this luxury in Aliso Viejo, but depending on where you go, this may be a more serious issue.
In addition to water contamination, it is important to be mindful of surface contamination. There may be bad bacteria contaminating the surfaces you and others touch that can cause illness. Be mindful and wash your hands.
Want to do your part to keep our water clean? There are many ways to reduce water pollution.
Home Quality
Even though your home seems like a safe space, there could be lead, fire, or electrical hazards you may not be aware of. Ensure all wiring is safe around the home, and make sure you have both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Don’t forget; when we change the time, change the batteries in your safety devices.
Toxic and Hazardous Substances
These substances are called toxic and hazardous for a reason. By exposing yourself to these toxic materials, you are putting your health at risk even if you aren’t thinking about it.
We want to do our part to help create a safe environment for everyone, and you also can help us in doing so. If you are in need of medical assistance and it is not an emergency, our team is here for you. Our Urgent Care is open every day. Feel free to come in with no appointment needed.
