COVID-19 Vaccine: What You Should Know
As the number of COVID-19 cases increases in Orange County, it is good to be informed on some basic facts regarding the COVID-19 vaccine based on what we know from the CDC.
1. Two Doses of the Vaccine are Required
If you or someone you know is getting the vaccine, depending on which one you receive, you may have to get a second shot 3-4 weeks after the first shot. This is important to ensure that you get the most use out of the vaccine.
2. Certain Individuals Are Recommended to Get it First
According to the CDC, health care personnel and residents of long-term care facilities are being offered COVID-19 vaccinations first. After these two groups are vaccinated, the plan is to offer the vaccine to people aged ≥75 years and essential frontline workers (non–health care workers). The third tier would be people who are 65–74 years old, people who are 16–64 years with high-risk medical conditions, and essential workers that were not part of the second phase.
3. There Is a Limited Supply of COVID-19 Vaccines
At this time, there are not very many quantities of the vaccine. Once the vaccine is widely available, the plan is to have several thousand vaccination providers offering COVID-19 vaccines in doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies, hospitals, and federally qualified health centers.
4. You May Have Some Side Effects From the COVID-19 Vaccine
When you get the COVID-19 vaccination, you may experience flu-like symptoms, and it may interfere with your ability to do daily activities. If this does come to fruition, it should go away in a few days.
