COVID-19 Vaccines and Treatment: Here’s the Update

Although there is no official vaccine or cure for COVID-19 yet, scientists have definitely made some headway! Some scientists are working on antiviral drugs to treat the illness and others are working on vaccines that could help prevent it. 

At this time, scientists are also experimenting with past antiviral treatments to see if they can help. According to a study by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,  Remdesivir, a drug developed to fight Ebola (that failed to treat Ebola), has helped reduce the coronavirus recovery time from fifteen days to eleven. There are mixed reviews on whether or not this drug is effective, but the FDA is considering sending out an emergency approval for Remdesivir in the near future.

Even though we are making progress, there is still no official vaccine. Anthony S. Fauci, the United States’ top infectious disease specialist, confirmed that the Trump administration is working with organizations to help develop a coronavirus vaccine and aiming to produce hundreds of millions of doses of it by January.

It will take time to discover a vaccine and test it over clinical trials. As we learn more about coronavirus, we will update our patients.
