10 Health Tips for the Season
This year has flown by! Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here. As we approach the holidays, we want to share some tips to keep your health in check.
1. Drink Plenty of Water
It doesn’t matter what month it is, keeping hydrated is crucial. During the winter, you may not think to drink water as much compared to warmer months when it’s hot outside. This is why it is important to be mindful of how much water you are consuming in a day.
2. Get a Flu Shot
In addition to the holiday season, there is flu season. As you spend more time in stores and seeing extra family members, you want to make sure you and your loved ones are protected.
3. Manage Your Stress
Whether it’s Black Friday shopping, Christmas shopping or making sure your house is clean before your family comes over for dinner, it can be stressful trying to get everything done. Take the time you need to prepare in advance and give yourself some “you” time. You will have plenty of time to socialize with everyone later.
4. Wash Your Hands Often
By washing your hands, it can not only prevent you from getting sick, but it also helps prevent the spread of germs. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly and often. If you do not have access to soap and water, make sure to use lots of hand sanitizer every time you touch surfaces.
5. Make Healthy Food Choices
This year, make sure to portion control and change it up by cooking a healthy holiday menu. Instead of green bean casserole, try serving steamed green beans. Instead of rice, try cauliflower rice. Small changes can make all the difference.
6. Avoid Foodborne Illnesses
According to the CDC, 48 million people get sick from a foodborne illness each year.
When you are in the kitchen, thoroughly clean utensils, cook foods to recommended temperatures, and properly store perishable foods.
7. Make Time For Exercise
The holiday season is busy, but you don’t want to neglect getting the exercise you need on a daily basis. Exercise is important for your physical and mental health. Find time for physical activity between your busy schedule.
8. Create Healthy Holiday Traditions
Make your own healthy traditions. Plan a “Hunger Games” relay or perhaps plan a hike for your entire family the day after Thanksgiving.
9. Stay Safe When Decorating
Accidents and injuries caused by decorating for the holidays are common. Be extra careful when climbing the ladder and roof. Even though the decorations are pretty, your safety is the most important.
10. Be Mindful of Winter Weather
When traveling for the holidays, make sure to be mindful of road conditions, traffic, and weather. You will want to dress warm if you will be in a cold area.
