Immunizations: Why They Are Important
August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and we wanted to share the importance of getting vaccinated and how you can take action this month.
The Importance of Immunizations:
1. Protects You From Disease
Vaccines contain the same antigens that cause disease. The antigens help your immune system fight infections faster and more effectively because it exposes your body to the virus. The antigens in the vaccines are either killed or weakened to the point that they don’t cause disease.
When you get a vaccine, it turns on your immune response, helping your body fight off and remember the germ so it can attack it if the germ is ever exposed to your body again. And since vaccines are made of very small amounts of weak or dead germs, they won’t make you sick.
2. Protects Others From Disease
The more people that get vaccinated, the less risk there is of contracting the disease. After a while, the disease will be rare if everyone gets their immunizations and will make it difficult to spread. Take precautions for your safety and the safety of others.
Steps to Get Vaccinated:
1. Call Your Doctor
The only way to know which vaccinations you’ve received is to contact your doctor and ask for your immunization records. Based on the last time you got your vaccinations, you may find you are up to date on your immunizations, or you may learn it is time to get re-vaccinated.
2. Get Vaccinated
Although you may think you don’t need vaccinations because you feel fine, you can never be too prepared. Vaccinations help you prevent disease compared to medicine that cure and treat diseases.
3. Encourage Your Friends to Get Vaccinated
By encouraging your friends and the community to do their part to stay healthy, it helps prevent the spread of diseases, and it makes sure that they do not get sick.
