COVID-19: How to Stay Safe at the Gym
How risky is it going to the gym right now? This is a question that many may be wondering as they look to return to their workout routine.
As gym facilities slowly begin to reopen, safety measures will be key. When you decide you are comfortable returning to your gym facility, it is important to wear a mask when possible, social distance from others, and wipe down equipment and hands as often as possible.
Safety Steps for Returning to the Gym
As we all know, COVID-19 is spread through respiratory droplets in the air or on surfaces.
This is why wearing a mask is a good idea when walking through the gym. Keep wipes or sanitizing foam on hand for before and after equipment use. This can help stop the spread of the virus.
If you enjoy taking group classes, it may be in your best interest to wait. In addition to the room being small and crowded, it also circulates warm, moist, infected air with each transition. To add, the more you exercise, the harder you breathe. This increases the rate at which respiratory droplets get dispersed and breathed in.
Alternatives to Going to a Gym
If you have decided to avoid the gym, there are still ways to get your exercise in. In California, we are fortunate that we have such nice weather, and the outdoors provides great options to do some cardio.
If you decide you would rather not work out outside, you can still take the time to workout inside using your own equipment and household items as your weights. If you need some inspiration, there are many online workouts that you can take advantage of.
