How To Stay Healthy In Summer

As we begin the summer season, many of us are getting ready to take vacations, enjoy the warmer weather, and unwind. With so much to look forward to, it can be easy to forget all of the healthy habits that were formed over the past few months. In order to avoid feeling bogged down by the heat, it’s important to integrate mindful choices that are good for your overall well being.
Along with the common cold, many patients come into our office this time of year with the stomach flu. If you start to feel unwell while enjoying time under the sun, stop by our office to meet with our doctors and physicians. Our Urgent Care is open every day of the week to ensure you are taken care of when you need us.
Here’s how to stay healthy during the warmer months of the year:
Stay Hydrated
As the weather heats up, it’s important to be mindful of how hydrated you are. While vacationing helps you relax, most travelers are not thinking about staying replenished. Minimize your risk of dehydration by drinking plenty of water, eating fruits and vegetables that contain high amounts of water, and limiting your caffeine intake. Dehydration can lead to serious complications at any age.
Get Outside
Take advantage of the longer days and spend time outdoors. Our physician assistant, Chardonnay, recommends taking your workout outside: “One of the things about summer that’s nice is the warmer months, so you can take that opportunity to mix up your exercise routine by implementing more swimming and other water sports and activities.”
Wear SPF
While it is necessary to wear sunscreen all year round, summer makes us more susceptible to sun damage. Make sure to apply sunscreen before you are outside and exposed to UV rays. Many sunscreens require time to be absorbed into our skin to work effectively. Keep in mind that no direct sunlight doesn’t always mean no damage. It takes years to see the effects of the sun. Therefore, every day counts.
Get Rest
This summer, make rest a priority. This season is filled with plenty of activities to enjoy, leading to busier schedules and less sleep. Without sufficient downtime, your productivity, mood, and immunity will suffer. Provide yourself with renewal and restoration by getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night. This will help your mind and body regain enough energy to be present in daily tasks and activities.
