How To Treat The Most Common Spring Allergies
Spring is the perfect season to spend time outdoors enjoying the warmth and blooming flowers. But for many, this season brings more than just beautiful scenery. Springtime is notorious for being peak allergy season. Seasonal allergies occur when your body overreacts to the pollen and mold in the environment.
With pollen and mold spores streaming from trees, plants and grass into the air, keeping your allergies under control can be difficult. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you probably feel the symptoms with every inhale.
Allergies leave up to 60 million Americans miserable during this time of year, and while there is no complete cure, there are ways to minimize the symptoms.
Here are the top spring allergy symptoms:
Nasal congestion
Even without having the common cold or flu, seasonal allergies in the spring can bring congestion. This affects your quality of sleep, as breathing becomes much more difficult.
Sneezing
Normally, when you start experiencing congestion and an itchy nose, sneezing will come along with it. Sneezing can occur when there is irritation within the mucus membranes of the nose and throat.
Watery and Itchy eyes
Itchy, watery eyes are a hallmark of seasonal allergies. Constantly rubbing red, puffy eyes will only irritate them further and cause distractions throughout the day.
Here’s how to ease the symptoms:
Rinse
Rinsing your nasal passages with saline solution is a quick and effective way to relieve nasal congestion. Rinsing flushes mucus and allergens from your nose.
Eye Drops
When you are experiencing irritated eyes, keep moisturizing eye drops handy. Drops will help rinse out any allergens, while providing moisture to minimize itching. If symptoms are severe, come into our office and our team can prescribe drops that will ease itching quickly.
Keep Your Home Pollen Free
While it is tempting to open the windows and let the fresh air indoors, if you are prone to Spring allergies, it’s best to keep the pollen out. Be mindful to dust every area of the house more frequently than normal.
Shower Before Sleeping
After spending the day outdoors, make sure to take a shower before going to sleep. You’ll want to rinse off any allergens that could have collected on your body or hair. A bed that is free of pollen and dust will give you a much better chance of getting a full night’s rest – without the sneezing frenzy.
Keep Pets Out Of The Bedroom
Along with ensuring your bed is clean and free from allergens that you personally can bring into the home, don’t forget that your furry friends also track pollen! Between draperies, upholstery and the bed, the bedroom can be a prime place for pet dander to collect.
While Spring is a time to welcome change, it’s never time to welcome uncomfortable allergy symptoms.
